fan switch

This how to will show you how to place your driver's side fan on a switch so it can be turned on without the car being on. After this you can cool your engine while in the staging lanes at the dragway or in between runs at the autocross course.

Tools

Two fan radiator (just making sure we clarify that)

Wire cutters / strippers

4 wire connectors

2 butt connectors

Wire (enough to run from the fan to a switch inside the car, from the switch to the battery and from the fan to a grounding point)

An on/off switch of your choice

1/2" wrench (to disconnect battery)

8mm socket

Flathead screw driver (to take off your Iceman intake)

A clean rag

Electrical Tape

Fuse

Time To Complete

About 30 minutes to 1 hour

Difficulty Level (1 = easy, 12 = tough)

2 beers

Darwin's Warnings!

As with all Carbone Racing technical how-to's, these are general guidelines we are not responsible for any harm you do to yourself or your vehicle.  Keep in mind that the electrical system on your Neon can hurt you if you are not careful, and you may need to take further precautions than listed in this how to.  Don't be scared, but please use common sense and be safe when doing any automotive repairs. If anyone following these directions hurts themselves blame Darwin, not Carbone Racing!

And Away We Go

1) Let the car cool down! You will be working near the radiator and transmission.

2) If you have an Iceman or similar intake, you will want to remove it to give yourself plenty of space. Put a clean rag over your throttle body so no goodies enter your motor.

3) Next unhook the battery. REMEMBER! Negative off first, then positive. Cover the battery posts with a fairly thick rag to prevent any tools from touching both posts at once.

4) Find the plug to the driver's side fan. Unhook the plug and cut it off. Make sure to leave at least 2 or 3 inches on the plug side of the wire you cut. Tape the extra wire out of the way of the fan.

5) You will need to run the blue wire from the plug in the engine bay to the interior of your Neon. Using one of the butt connectors extend the blue wire with the wire you bought. Make sure there is more than enough to extend the blue wire, the black wire and for wire from the switch to the battery. Tape up your connections with electrical tape. To get wire inside, you can either poke a hole in one of the rubber grommets or drill a hole in the firewall.

6) Attach one of the insulated connectors to one side of the wire that will run from the battery to your switch inside. Connect the wire with the positive battery connector. Run the wire to the interior of the car through the same hole in the firewall that you ran the blue wire through.

7) Connect some extension wire to the black wire. This will be the ground wire. Attach one of the insulated connectors to the other side of the wire and connect to any grounding point in your engine bay. You will need an 8mm socket or wrench to take off the screw to which the ground wires are attached.

8) Mount the switch where you want it in the interior. After the switch is mounted, you need to connect the wire from the battery and the blue wire. Attach an insulated connector to each of these wires and connect them to your switch.

9) Reconnect your battery. REMEMBER! This is done positive first, then negative. This is the reverse of disconnecting. Test your switch before putting your interior back together and intake back on. If the fan works, enjoy! If not, double check all of your wiring.
